For the past 13 years the Lynn Richter Blog has leaned decidedly to the right. In an effort to stay en vogue with a culture demanding diversity, tolerance, and equality I am enlisting some leftward voices from Living Left, an eclectic activism group on a mission to, in their words, “bring the light of leftism to a dark world”.
This should be fun.
Dear Living Left,
I am committed to ridding society of the oppressive patriarchal structure we’ve been struggling under for too long. My problem is that I’m an honor student and captain of my high school football team with a scholarship to play in college. Between practices and pledging for fraternities I don’t have time to go to feminist demonstrations with my girlfriend, let alone keep up the social media accounts my girlfriend set up for me to be a male feminist influencer. My girlfriend and I feel very strongly about this cause. My girlfriend suggested I ask you to give me some ideas on how I can do my part even though I’m so busy.
I commend your commitment to ending patriarchy. Most young men your age aren’t aware they are struggling under patriarchal oppression until a girlfriend or female teacher points it out. I see why you’re an honor student.
When you get to college you’ll find it easy to apply your energies toward ending patriarchy since most of your classes will educate you on the evils of male dominance as will your professors. For now focus on simple actions that reap big rewards: Keep your girlfriend by your side and learn from her. She sounds very motivated and informed. Don’t open doors for her or any woman or behave toward a woman in any manner that might be construed as chivalrous. Chivalry is the hallmark of patriarchy. Also, check your male privilege to be sure that you’re not an honor student just because you’re a male. Grading can be very sexist.
Instead of putting your efforts into joining a fraternity you might consider joining MenEngage, a feminist-informed gender equality group, or NOMAS (National Organization for Men Against Sexism). Invite members of your football team to join with you. Having conscientious, feminist-minded young men is essential to ridding the inequality among the sexes.
